Hyundai Kia Engine Fire Investigation

Kessler Topaz Meltzer & Check, LLP (“Kessler Topaz”) is Investigating Reports of Dangerous Engines Fires in Certain Hyundai and Kia Vehicles

Kessler Topaz is investigating a potential defect in certain Hyundai Motor America ("Hyundai") and Kia Motors America ("Kia") vehicles linked to potentially dangerous and costly engine fires.

On February 8, 2022, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that "Kia and Hyundai have identified an increasing risk of an engine compartment fire. Although the cause remains unknown, the manufacturers believe an electrical component in the anti-lock brake system may experience an internal electrical short circuit that could increase the risk of fire both while the vehicle is being driven or parked." In addition this defect is so dangerous that "Kia Motors America and Hyundai Motor America recommend that owners of [affected] vehicles park their vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures due to a risk of fire, even if the vehicle is turned off."

The vehicles that may be affected include:

Vehicle Model Years
Hyundai Santa Fe 2016-2018
Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2017-2018
Hyundai Santa Fe XL 2019
Hyundai Tucson 2014-2015
Kia K900 2016-2018
Kia Sportage 2014-2016
